| When I work directly from observation a painting
is about the study of a situation, about the process of painting
more than the creation of a painting I am trying to do nothing more
than study and understand the relationships of color and shape in
my subject.
As the subject changes (perhaps a cloud obscures the sun), my painting
changes. What¹s left on the surface is a thin skin covering
a history of study.

When I work from imagination a painting is more about
the illustration of an idea, something political or emotional. These
paintings will have subjects such as war, class-consciousness, abortion
rights.
In contrast to my work from observation, the colors in these paintings
will be garish, the figures distorted and cartoon-like to further
the concept or agenda of the painting. |
