Featured Artist: Pauline Werkmeister
Pauline Werkmeister lives in Milwaukee with her partner and a big yellow lab named Jake. She attends Alverno College where she studies art and education. Painting is a lifelong passion and experimental elements in texture and medium became pronounced during the year that she lived in Prague. During her time in the Czech Republic, she created Four Women and Nightmare. These pieces are good examples of the dramatic shift in tone and image that life in Eastern Europe brought to her work. Pieces from earlier in her career feature lone figures and are earmarked by solitude and a haunting use of bruised blues and purples. The next period of work explodes with animation and interaction. As a longtime fan who has followed her work closely, each exhibit unfolds a new and previously undisplayed mastery. Each painting snags the viewer's heart and causes you to look closely, look deeper into the image and often it is the slightest smallest detail that unfolds into a mystery. Pauline Werkmeister's work is pure and honest and true. It is as refreshing as a summer shower and as invigorating as a chase. Take your time with her work and you will be rewarded with new insight on art and perhaps even on life.
